Time for Another Vote!
I was thinking about the languages the Jaz Parks series has been translated into, and realized it is imperative that we make a decision within the next few days! In what language would Jaz sound the most badass?
A. English
B. French
C. German
D. Spanish
E. Russian
F. Hungarian
Or would it matter if she was armed with a bazooka?

I’m gonna have to say A. English but thats only because it’s the only language I can understand. You could be talking a whole lot of smack to me in another language and I’d probably turn around around and say “Yes, it was nice meeting you too”. However if armed with a bazooka even the nicest of comments would sound badass.

Hmmm…. well, i dont actually understand anyother language apart from how to say a few animals, hi, bye, and whats your name in french, but i’d say Russian for some reason. But if she had a bazooka, i really dont think it would matter what language

I’ve read the firt 2 books in French and she sounds badass enough, but actually i cannot compare since a i haven’t read the english version.
but like my 2 follows said with a bazooka she would be badass whatever the language. but i’m not sure it would be easy to move with such a big weapon o_O

I think that no matter what language she spoke she’d be badass. Especially when holding Grief, or in this case a bazooka. But as English is the only language I can speak or understand I’ll have to stick with it as my answer.

Everything sounds badass in German. Even if it’s something completely innocuous and you can’t understand it.
December 10th, 2009 at 5:41 am
hello
For me B french (of course) because I’m french
December 10th, 2009 at 6:14 am
French. Seriously have you ever listened to a movie in french. Shrek was downright mean sounding. It would only add to Jaz’s badass factor.
December 10th, 2009 at 7:47 am
Hungarian! Gotta vote for my people lol
December 10th, 2009 at 8:10 am
Hey, what about a click language like Xhosa now that would be something to hear/see!
Personally I love listening to people speak or sing in a language other than English or with unusual accents in English. I get bored with familiar sounds. ;p
I think the language the person spoke wouldn’t matter when they have a bazooka on their shoulder. I believe I’d be focusing on their emotions by the way they spoke, their facial expression, and that large gun!

I have to vote for German. Its just close enough to English to get them meaning, but foreign enough to make one uncomfortable. The other languages listed just seem too different or unusual (at least where I live). They would just sound strange, not necessarily badass. Though the bazooka does sort of imply intimidation tactics.
December 10th, 2009 at 8:49 am
It would absolutely not matter if she was armed with a bazooka.
However, Russian would sound the most badass.
December 10th, 2009 at 10:58 am
Definitely English or Russian
Both can make a character sound like a total badass ^.^
A bazooka would make the language sort of irrelevant, although a good line in a well-chosen badass language could add to the effect
December 10th, 2009 at 1:10 pm
Russian or Hungarian definitely. They would scare me anyway, even without the bazooka.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:20 pm
Russian for sure.
Everything sounds badass in Russian.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
I would have to say German — it’s just a very gutteral language and there are just enough words that sound like their English counterparts, that we would get the drift, even if Jaz wasn’t holding a bazooka in her hands.
December 10th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
definitly russian… love the sound of that language even if i cant understand it!! sounds soooooo baddass!!!
December 10th, 2009 at 1:59 pm
i think Jaz is bad ass in every language, she is just that AWESOME!!!
December 10th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
While the bazooka may render any bad ass remarks unnecessary, i have to go with Russian, always sounds strong! Though i’m not sure how the slang would work, might not have the same punch as in english, but hey, worth a try i think!
December 10th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Jaz is badass even when she doesn’t try to be; I’d say that she’d be bad ass in any language she spoke…however, I’m a big fan of Russian, I’ll be taking lessons in the New Year, and please don’t ask why…it’s just a language that fascinates me.
As for the bazooka, that’s a language all on it’s own. If I saw Jaz with a bazooka in hand, I’d be finding the nearest bolthole to hide in until the crisis passes and it was safe to come out…maybe after Jaz left would probably be safer.
December 10th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Mmmhhh… I think a bazooka would speak “no friendly intentions” in pretty much every language, lol.
Anyway. My language-studying-self would say Jaz works for the CIA, so you’ve got to stick with English, for “to translate is to betray”. But I’d vote for either German or Russian. They both sound harsh enough. I think everything turns out sounding elegant in French – which doesn’t work if you’re looking for badass – and Spanish always makes me think about funny things and parties. I’ve never studied Hungarian so I don’t know about it.
December 10th, 2009 at 5:12 pm
persoanlly I always thought chinese was the best way to curse. Think Firefly and Serenity. It always sounded way cooler when the started spouting random curse phrases. But of the choices presented Spanish always sounds the best. French sounds too soft, and German, Hungarian and Russian are too gutteral. It may sound like she’s bringing up a hairball or is choking.
December 10th, 2009 at 6:10 pm
hmmmmm id say english because i cant really understand any other language but i have to say that spanish curses sound really awesome. Although the bazooka sorta means she can b badass without saying anythying
December 10th, 2009 at 7:34 pm
Russian
December 10th, 2009 at 9:42 pm
E Russian or maybe C.German beause those ae both just totaly badass!
December 10th, 2009 at 10:30 pm
Russian has some of the lovliest endearments ever that I would like to hear Vayl telling her.
For pure badassness I’d say have her be quiet. Jaz scares me when she goes quiet.
December 11th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
Dude! Totally Russian.
(Kind of off topic)
But, if she was English with a Russian accent, that would have been cool. LOL. I can picture it now.
Seriously badass. ♥
December 12th, 2009 at 2:24 pm
Hungarian would be quite handy since it has great variety of swear words, comparing to English or German anyways.
December 13th, 2009 at 3:49 am
well… i would vote for russian. i’m in love with that language.
hungarian version is nothing compared to the english. i read jaz first in hungarian, and it was good, but unfortunatly just the first book is translated, so i read the second and all the others in english, and maaaaaan, it was so much better!
but russian is my language. i really hope, that i can start to learn it next year!
December 13th, 2009 at 8:09 am
From what I know of other languages I’d probably go for eiher russian or german, both are fairly harsh and gutteral.
December 14th, 2009 at 5:27 am
I say either German or Russian. Just because they’re not know for sounding so beautiful. In Lasher by Ann Rice, the villian couldn’t stand to listen to German because it was so harsh. The bazooka just makes it sound even cooler. But French which is thought of as sounding “pretty” would be balance really well in French and be TOTALLY AWESOME!

I apologize for not replying to you all personally. Life’s been, ugh! But I’m pulling it all together again and back on track, so thanks and big hugs for your patience!
Love all your comments! Zsuzsa, you must teach me Hungarian swear words! I worked with a German guy once who taught me how to swear in his language. Still haven’t forgotten the lesson!
I wish your translation had been a happier experience for you, Reby, but thanks for sticking with me. You rock!
December 15th, 2009 at 3:37 am
hmm, i would say Russian. deefinately Russian.
I know a few Russian swear words… hehehehehe. They make me feel completely badass. XD
But once again, like almost everyone else has said, it really wouldn’t matter what the language, she would still sound completely badass with a bazooka.
December 26th, 2009 at 2:09 pm
I’ve read all your books in English eventhough it’s not my mothertongue ^^ but when I read it in German (just a few pages) I was really disappointed. It’s not the same flair like you have in the original tongue. But maybe I just have problems to acclimatize to it *gg* – who knows, hell ^^.
Oh, please never let your books be translated in some kind of Slavic language. I always have to surpress my laughter ^^ especially when it’s in Russian or Slovene
Nice grets from a crazy multi-language-freak
December 28th, 2009 at 1:24 pm
i think it should be russian…for some reason i think that would be bad ass
December 30th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
I was thinking German or Hungarian. I love these books and both languages are sexy as hell! =P
