Life in the Fast Lane

Okay, that’s the song I’m currently grooving to, but it describes my weekend nicely as well.  Saturday we spent the day at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway watching qualifying for the Indy 500.  New Zealander, Scott Dixon, won the pole, running an average speed of over 226 mph.  WOW!  I really like old Scott.  He’s kinda reserved, but very classy, and underneath you can sense a pretty good sense of humor lurking.  And my guy, Dan Wheldon, is starting second, so I’m a pretty happy camper.

Then Sunday we went the opposite direction, driving to St. Louis to see Jersey Boys at the Fox Theatre.  The wind scared the crap out of me most of the time we were on the highway, trying to knock us out of our lane every thirty seconds or so.  These are the times I truly understand what spawned the god legends.  Because it sure felt like a big old fist was smacking into us repeatedly, perhaps irritated that we hadn’t made our morning offering of sacrificial lamb and grapes (since virgins are so hard to locate these days!).  Anyway, it was a fabulous musical, well worth the trip.  And we had a blast on the way home, stopping at a cafe that advertised foot-high pies.  We measured.  Our slices were only six-inches (most of that meringue), but hey, they were still delish!

So now I’m home-bound for the week, finishing up the rewrite on One More Bite.  But I’m curious.  What’s your ideal weekend like?

My ideal weekend is a lot like that actually! That sounds fuuuun. I spent most of my Sunday digging my nails into my palm and trying to remember to breathe while watching a spectacular Formula 1 race. Easily the best performance my driver has given in his career so far! I think I was actually shaking by the end of it, lol, I got so excited.

I think I’d lose patience with Indianapolis though, too long for me!

Your weekend sounds like a blast Jen! I’m jealous that you got to go to Jersey boys – I LOVE musicals. I’ve never really gotten into racing though…probably b/c nobody else at home watches it.

Hmm.. my ideal weekend would probably include some form of camping…possibly in Glacier. Hiking, campfires, and lots of s’mores.

Or maybe that’s just what I’m wishing I was doing right now!…I suppose that qualifies right? :)

It IS long! But so fun. I’ve been nearly every year (with only a couple of misses) since 1992. Such a unique event. You just can’t describe what it feels like–you have to experience it at least once. But it’s not for everyone. A sense of humor is definitely required. What I love most is that there are hundreds of thousands of people there of all ages (literally toddlers to geezers) all to enjoy a day of racing. So few things in life interest such a wide range of people. We hooked my four-year-old nephew this year, which delights my forty-two-year-old hubby to no end! Too cool!

Yup, Monica, it definitely qualifies. Sounds fun, too! Especially the s’mores part!!

my ideal weekend is a bit different to yours. my boyfriend and i live 4 hours apart and don’t get to see each other often (i think i’ve actually forgotten what he looks like lol) so my ideal weekend would consist of me and him just acting like to young love struck losers. maybe we’d go out for breakfast and then go for a picnic or something. the stuff they do in the movies lol

  6. jrardin Says:

Very cool plan. Hope it comes together for you soon!

Ahhh, easy, peace and quiet to read my to be read pile (Biting the Bullet is in it). Or watching Scott Dixon (fellow Kiwi) win Indy :-)

Oh, loaned a friend Once Bitten, Twice shy and she not only loved it, but commented “prefer her to Laurell K”

  8. Tez Miller Says:

Kiwi accents are a hoot. And for Trivia, I think Mr Dixon was born in Brisbane…in Australia ;-) Though he’s certainly Kiwi now.

    Have a lovely day! :-)

Ideal weekend? Hmmmm. That would probably be me, my best friend, lots of movies, and chocolate. There would probably also be a bit of prank calling to some friends who chose to ignore us that weekend and then we would stay up till 4am laughing at something stupid that we wouldn’t even remeber the next day. Oh and all of this would be after we got a one at a marching competition. Go band! Yes I am a nerd.

  10. jrardin Says:

Penny, you have enlightened me. When the announcers called Scott a ‘Kiwi’ and he totally didn’t react I thought, Is he insulted by that? I see now he wasn’t. Whew! Also very cool just to be mentioned in the same sentence as Laurell K.

Tez, are you rooting for your fellow countryman, Ryan Briscoe (http://www.ryanbriscoe.com/)? He seems a charming guy, and really has a great chance to win this year, I think.

Kalea, your weekend sounds great. I am a huge band fan, by the way. Gotta be. Both my kids march.

  11. Tez Miller Says:

Dear, dear Innocent Jen – in Australia “root” means “have sex with”. So I “cheer” for sporting teams and such – not “root” ;-) Now you’re enlightened with the wonderful world of Australian vocab ;-)

    Have a lovely day! :-)

  12. jrardin Says:

Yipes! I’ll definitely have to remember that one! Reminds me of something I’d written in Biting the Bullet that Bella Pagan, my UK editor, told me Europeans would find hilarious–though I totally didn’t mean it that way. Ya never know what means what when you cross continents. Thanks for the translation!

  13. Tez Miller Says:

I’m about sixty pages into Biting, so I’ll definitely have to look out for unintentional hilarity – thanks for the heads up :-)

    Have a lovely day! :-)

  14. hanne Says:

Does that mean that the US version still has the hilarity in it? Man. I think I have to read it again; I hate missing things like these – intentional or not!

  15. jrardin Says:

As I recall, the sentence mentioned something about the words “rear” or “backing into him,” giving the sentence a gay sex connotation I really didn’t intend there that made the whole paragraph a real hoot. I changed it. As far as I know, the U.S. and U.K. versions match exactly (except for that Once Bitten cover).

  16. Phoebe Says:

    Haha! I can imagine.

I remember once a friend (American friend) wrote “rooting her” as in, “wanting her to win”. That has a whole other meaning over here!
