On the Treadmill

Literally. Yup, we just got one of those conveyor belts for walkers. So now I’m trying to figure out how to make it more fun. It’ll be in the living room, so we’ll be able to watch TV while exercising. However, hubby has suggested we might mount some sort of bracket that could hold a laptop and/or book to distract us while we trudge off the poundage. I kinda like his thinking, because I’m big into distraction. And it also reminded me of this clip from that old classic movie, Splash. (About a minute in.) Ahh, John Candy. You were so damn funny. That dude sure knew how to enjoy his racquetball!

What would you add to the bracket that might take our treadmill into a whole new entertainment venue?

I would add a puppet theatre. Or possibly a mini-fridge, although that would probably destroy the whole point of having a treadmill. Hmmm…

  2. Jill Says:

Having spent many hours bored almost to tears on the treadmill, any distraction is welcome. I love to watch my favourite movies but even that gets old eventually.(Except for anything with Hugh Jackman or Johnny Depp)! I’m so unco-ordinated I have balance issues if I try to use my hands, so computer games are out. I often wondered if I could get a DVD of a real hunk (see above) running just ahead of me as an incentive. Never actually catching up to him would limit the appeal eventually though. I can’t wait to hear the brilliant ideas everyone else comes up with.

  3. Tori Says:

iPod velco cause the blasted things never stay in my pocket or armstrap like they should. Nor do my earbuds stay in so everyone has to listen to what I want at home when exercising

  4. Sophie Says:

I realy want a treadmill, though knowing me i’d get fed up after a week!

We have a cross trainer and as long as i’ve got good music with a fast beat im happy enough!

I agree with Tori, definitely somewhere to put your ipod would be great, don’t think i could read on a treadmill, i get sick trying to read on the move! What if you put a cake or something in front of you, i’d run for that, though would defeat the purpose as i would just eat it all in one go!

I think I would have to go with something along the lines of what Jill said. Maybe a continuosly streaming slideshow of some of the worlds sexiest men.

Ok those are just a few but I’m pretty sure it would work because, hey, I am already getting distrated from what I was doing to look up their pictures. And it is a very happy distraction.

  6. Vale Says:

I agree with Tori and Sophie: music, music, music! I’d put a radio as well, so when you’re fed up to listen to your songs you can always tune on a station and listen to something different. I don’t think I’d be able to read while moving, much less working with a laptop. I think I’d get distracted and trip or forget to run altogether, lol.

  7. eiren Says:

a laptop is great as you can do music and movies with it. even better if you use it with bluetooth headphones as no wires to get tangled.

if you’re feeling like punishment you can stream cooking shows whilst you trod your treadmill :)

  8. Andie Says:

I don’t recommend the laptop or books at all–I know from experience, that you can’t concentrate on a book and get a good workout at the same time. If you are concentrating on the book, you are not getting your heart rate up! :) I like watching the tv or music a lot. Those are great distractions!

  9. Jenna Says:

I actually love to run outdoors but the weather can make that difficult so I found one of those dvds of scenic footage that appears like you are running on the beach, forest path etc and I love it. Of course if you have a tiny tv that wont help you much, but it so helps me. Makes me feel like I am actually going somewhere when I can’t run outside.
My friend though had a great idea. She had her husband hold a cupcake in front of her as she ran and would alternately move farther and closer, as she ran for the tasty treat. Oddly it worked for her and she lost twenty pounds. So maybe you should add a temptation tray.

  10. Courtz Says:

Hmmm….. If you had a nintendo DS, that might be good. But i’d definatly put a little thing for a book to lean on. Or maybe put one of those things on What’s it called…… a sketch board? You know, those things where you twist the nobs and it makes a picture, then you shake it and the picture goes away. that would be cool. :D

  11. Bec Says:

iPod dock so you can put on some inspiring music. I’ll Make a Man Out of You from Mulan always works for me. :D

  12. Chloe Says:

Forget adding anything to the treadmill, I’d just set it on a slower setting and walk with a book in my hands.
It’s slightly more safer than doing the same thing while walking somewhere outside.

Alternatively, setting up some method of catching up with my emails/things I need to read online while walking.
Something waterproof, so I can use it in the shower as well.

  13. Mandy Says:

A good book and good music! :)

  14. Gareth Says:

Errrmmm, at the moment just go for the music. Although to be honest my other half plays Oblivion (on the Xbox 360) whilst she works out.

Perhaps contact companies like Wii etc and ask when they’re going to do something with a treadmill. Perhaps get it worked out for a fighting game so you can have a run and a battle etc. LOL

  15. Penny W Says:

I use good music on the exercise bike, read a book or watch tv :-) . Hmm, a treadmill, maybe Jason Stratham on the one in front of me :-D
Though I do like Gareths wii idea.

  16. jrardin Says:

I’m all for live entertainment, Katie! Oh! Puppet Vayl and Jaz! Too good!

    LOL, Jill!

I agree about the earbuds, Tori. Our ears must be shaped outside the standard.

Yeah, Sophie, I’m not sure I could pull off the reading either. But as little time as I have for it anymore, I’m willing to try!

I think you may have inspired the entire Jazfan base, Amber!

Somehow I see you walking to a Sousa march, Vale. Which is, I know, totally ridiculous. So funny!

What is it about bluetooth, eiren? I just think they look so bizarre! Maybe if I could find one with a smiley face. Or fangs. Yeah, then I’d feel less weird using one.

Thanks, Andie. I never turn away expert advice!

    Love it, Jenna!!

    Aw, Courtz, that’s a classic!

Bec, my daughter is absolutely horrified that I have never seen Mulan. Apparently I’m about to be cured of my loss–yay for spring break and Disney!

    Duly noted, Chloe.

    Works anywhere, right Mandy?

    Oh, Gareth, that is PERFECT!!!

    LOL, Penny!

  17. Vale Says:

Whaaat? Nooo! lol That’d definitely be ridiculous, not to mention way eye-catching (or should I say ear-catching?). :-)
Me too, I like Gareth’s idea. Let’s do a petition, he he.

  18. Lola d Says:

Music is the key or a nice scene on the Tv like your walking in the park…with a really nice view(some really hot butt walking/running)in front of you.Its the rabbit & carrot scenario….I think I’m going to the gym now for a walk I hear the fire fighters lift weights twice aday.So even if you can’t touch looking can still put a smile on your face….

  19. Jennifer Sekella Says:

I don’t think I could walk and us the laptop, but the book or a magazine would certainly be good – or a video game (I haven’t used one in years, but it seems like you might be able to shoot and walk at once… I dunno – what do you think?). :)

  20. Aubree Says:

I read when I’m on my treadmill, or I listen to my audio books… I’ve gotten some really good ones from audible.com and podiobooks.com… and I have noticed that I speed up when I get to the exciting bits and I slow down to listen to the love scenes, lol. It works for me :)

  21. Aubree Says:

Oh, and get yourself a good pair of headphones :) I know they look dorky, but it’s okay to look dorky at home right? And they don’t fall off! lol

BTW Mulan is awesome, so I hope you enjoyed it, “I’ll make a man out of you” get’s me pumped too :)
