Our Song

Music has always had a powerful influence in my life.  I’ve been playing the piano since I was eight.  I’ve sung in choirs, on stage, and at people’s weddings.  I introduced my kids to music before they were born and maybe, just maybe, that’s part of the reason they’ve both chosen careers in the field.

Today I was thinking, Wouldn’t it be great if we all had our own theme songs?  Every time we made a grand entrance, hidden speakers would begin playing a tune created solely for us.  Barring that, maybe we could borrow from some of the great melodies already composed for other purposes.  I have a couple of faves I’d pick because, face it, I’m easily bored and one would get old after a while.  Here’s the first, which pertains mainly to my career.  The next works better for my life in general, so we could use it for trips to the grocery, library, doctor…you get the idea.  Check it out.

How about you?  If you could choose a theme song to accompany you into parties and out to lunch, which would you choose? (Linkies welcome–let’s fill this site with sound, shall we?)

And, just for laffs, what song do you think best reflects Jaz, or if you prefer, Jaz & Vayl?  (I’m humming already!)

  1. Marissa Turner Says:

I’ve got a dozen different songs that people tell me are perfect for me. Whiskey Girl by Toby Keith is my husband’s suggestion. Another is S.E.X by Nickleback.
Now that I’m thinking about it, I don’t think any of them don’t have some adult theme or perverted message in them…

I’d pick Once Upon A Dream from Sleeping Beauty.

As for Jaz and Vayl? How about Garth Brook’s Red Strokes?

  4. Vale Says:

Well, I don’t play (wish I could) or sing, but I think music is important in my life too. I do spend a lot of time listening to music. I think it’d be handy to have a different theme song for each mood or situation we’re into, so we’d give messages like for ex. “I’m happy”, “I’m feeling lonely” or “back off, I’m pissed!”. It’d be nice.

I can’t help thinking about Jaz and Vayl every time I listen to “I’d come for you” and “Never gonna be alone” by Nickelback. Actually I’ve come to think that “I’d come for you” could be some sort of soundtrack for Bitten to Death… but then that’s just my thought.

Samantha, I’m with you on “Broken” by Amy Lee and Seether. I absolutely love that song!

  6. Nicole Says:

There is hardly a time during the day that I am not listening to music. My genres shift from rock to classical. A couple of my favorite songs right now that I fell would work well for either Jaz or Vayl are:

“The Feel Good Drag,” by Anberlin. “Halloween Girl,” by Ghosts on the Radio. “The Little Things,” by Danny Elfman. “Ricochet!” by Shinny Toy Guns. “Addicted,” by Saving Abel. “All Around Me,” by Flyleaf. “Breathe Me,” by Sia. “Gortoz Aran,” by Hans Zimmer. Well, and maybe a few others…

Or possibly a little more hard rock… maybe “Crazy Bitch,” by Buckcherry or “Animal I Have Become,” by Three Days Grace.

  7. Amy Says:

None of these seem to fit entirely but there are snatches here and there that work pretty well.

  8. Summer Says:

    Hi Jennifer!

I have this “thing” when I read a book; like there’s a hum at the back of my head. Songs that I seem to tie with whatever book I’m reading. My husband thinks it’s weird and interesting in so many levels. Mostly weird, probably.
Anyway, here are thing songs I have already tied to your books, at least in my head.

    Possession by Sarah McLachlan
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akjHwk9ur2Q

    37 Stitches by Drowning Pool
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sJvYpK0kfI

    Breathe Me by Sia
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6PGrub3jUc

Hemorrhage (In My Hands) by Fuel
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K4B7s2njvo

Bring Me To Life by Evanescence

    For You by The Calling

The Little Things by Danny Elfman

Too Many Words by Sick Puppies
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0-t2P8ZR1Wk

  9. Taylor (: Says:

Ouch! So many songs, so little time! LOL
Jaz & Vayl are hard to pick for but I’d have to say:
“Your Guardian Angel” – The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
“Bring on the Wonder” – Susan Enan
    “The Call” – Regina Spektor

I just can’t think right now! I’ll probably be back with more. LOL!

  10. Rox1 Says:

LOL Jen, love your picks. GAH was the best show in its time (aging myself). This is a great concept. Obviously, with my name, all my life I’ve heard The Police and the Theme From Rocky sung out upon entry (my name being Roxanne, nickname Rocki). My DH, clever thinker, gave me Brown-Eyed Girl. And yes, they got old a long time ago. Guess you’ve been hearing Tommy Tutone?

But certain songs I hear when I’m out and about do make me feel like struttin’ my bad self, like the opening riffs to Tom Petty & the HBs “American Girl” and MJ’s “The Way You Make Me Feel” (again aging myself). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNgt7U9QrFQ

Yup, everyone should have a theme song.

BUMP Vale’s choices for J&V’s love themes. Sooo perfect!!

  11. Samantha Says:

I sang in the church choirs for a year, but just didn’t have the time cuz of work & school. I had a solo @ church Christmas before last in front of 250plus ppl.& my mike went dead so I had to sing with no mike. I sang b4 I could talk & danced b4 I could walk, & thats the God’s honest truth just ask my momma!

  12. jrardin Says:

Uh, oh, Marissa’s our resident hottie! If we ever need to do a video now we know who to call!

I’ve always liked Fighter, Samantha, but never seen the video before. Loved the concept.

    You nailed it, Vale!

Okay, Nicole, apparently I’ve been living under a rock. Never heard of any of those. Will go searching soon!

That Elevation vid is so cool, Amy. Bono’s a true artist, I think.

I especially like Bring Me to Life, Summer, for obvious reasons. It seems to me that Jaz and Vayl both do that for each other.

    Cool deal, Taylor!

Love it, Rox1! Something about that song makes ya feel good all over!

I totally believe you, Samantha. The day my daughter was born she was making the sweetest little baby noises that I swear, to this moment, was singing.

  13. Marissa Turner Says:

Baby singing is the best; sadly, it knocks me right the hell out and then the baby pulls a fast one and destroys the house.

  14. zanheltangia Says:

“hidden speakers would begin playing a tune created solely for us.”

Why have them hidden? Bring one everywhere you go:

    http://www.thinkgeek.com/tshirts-apparel/interactive/a5bf/

And program in 20 different ones if you don’t like the presets.

    I find the oddest things -.-;;;

  15. Penny Says:

    Okay,
In the morning (espically a Wednesday morning) the theme to Mission Impossible :-)
Combustables Edisons album Schizophonic, Queens Play the Game, Under Pressure, okay the whole Hot Space album, and I’m going slightly mad. Oh, interspursed with Leonard Cohen, pieces from Chess, Le Miserables and Phantom of the oprea :-)
I generally have things with a fast beat on my MP3 player, everything from Rolling Stones, Animals, Beetles and the Who to Pink, Americana, Greenday and Linkin Park :-D
Sorry no links, but we have a very slow connection speed.

  16. Vale Says:

Thanks a lot Samantha, Rox1 and Ms. Rardin!!! I’m so glad I’m not the only one feeling like that about those songs! I just love them!
And thank you Samantha for providing the links, ’cause I hadn’t been able to find any. (By the way, do you know Anywhere by Amy Lee too? I think you’d like it if you like Broken…)

  17. Rayne Says:

Wow, i’m so glad Vale mentioned Anywhere by Amy Lee, that song is SOO beautiful and I would totally pick it for Vayl and Jaz.
BUT, the song that DOES remind me of the two of them the most is “Savin’ Me” by Nickelback. It’s like it was written for them.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BrDFpZtVJs

  18. Rayne Says:

Actually, I don’t like the quality of that vid, so here’s a different one lol
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UFR3ww00zM&feature=related

  19. jrardin Says:

I had a little boy like that, Marissa! Many times I’d lament to his dad that if we didn’t watch out he was going to grow up to be a bank robber! He’s turning out to be quite the cool dude, so there’s always hope!

Awesome T, zanheltangia! A perfect example of why I love artists! Quirkily perfect!

No worries about the lack of links, Penny. You got me humming anyway! Loved your picks!

Aw, perfect, Rayne! I’m going to go download that song for my IPod right now! (Can’t believe I don’t have it already!)

  20. Vale Says:

I agree with you, Rayne. I hadn’t thought about that one, and allthough I still prefer the newer ones for Jaz and Vayl, I think that could definitely be in the group too. Now I’m wondering, what about “Far away”…?
You can see the videos of both on Nickelback’s site. The screen is a bit little, but the quality is good.
    http://www.nickelback.com/

  21. Roxanne Says:

For Jaz and Vayl, I think maybe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7f_HsjpSVaI or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q233CxlIZtk (this video is insane and has nothing to do with the train my mind is on! LOL)

For me? Perhaps http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wHs9YcnOWE ??? LMAO But this is really more me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMR0c5iMCsw or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LEsuk_dtLY

  22. jrardin Says:

Oh my garsh, Roxanne, Holding Out for a Hero is one of my all-time faves! And I love your second pick for yourself. Never heard it before, but it’s going on my IPod too!

  23. Gareth Says:

I dunno on this one, I have a few that could be fun. Of the modern tracks Hot n’ Cold by Katy Perry is good fun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-LhyAVzDBI) although I’d probably have some sort of classic track such as The Flamingo’s I only have Eye’s for You or R Dean Taylor’s Indiana Wants me.

For Jaz I might pic BOC’s (Don’t Fear) The Reaper. Seems appropriate. LOL

  24. Gareth Says:

Just thought about Cole, I suspect his one is The Divinyls “I Touch Myself.” LOL

  25. jrardin Says:

OMG, Gareth, your pick for Cole…too, too funny!!

  26. Rox! Says:

Thumbs up on that Meredith Brooks song. Definitely have those days.

  27. SarahH Says:

I think a good song for Jaz would be Burning Bright by Shindown
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIAF1tXFsuc
and Made of Glass by Trapt
Maybe Vayl’s song for Jaz Secondhand Serenade- Fall For You
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKi125iqnFg
And Verona Grove- Everything you Dreamed
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftcOxc-q5-U

  28. jrardin Says:

Such cool picks, SarahH! Thanks for introducing me to these songs!

  29. Melanie Says:

I don’t know about a soundtrack for my life but I try to have a song to go along with what I write most of the time. Sometimes it has nothing to do with what I write, and other times it does. In any case, I like most of the songs the people above me listed, even if I don’t know half of them as I tend to listen to more metal, hard rock, classic rock, and even classical music. A good song for Jaz and Vayl might be “Vampire Heart” or “Under the Rose” by H.I.M.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfmQGd01Ejk

  30. Jean-Noël Says:

    Hi everybody & everybodettes!

Definitely a hot song for Jaz Dearest :
“Kill, Kill, Kill” by the Pierces

    /watch?v=8trKFePpnvk

“What were you doing in my dream last night
    Hunnie?
Well I thought I locked that door up tight,
    Baby.
Well it’s a mystery to me
    How you keep on slippin’
    In my mind…
And it’s downright dirty that this ‘ol wound
    Won’t heal with time

Well you could wash my bain
You could tear out my heart
But I would never forget you
    (never…)
    You could change my name
I could make a new start
But I would never forget you
    (never…)”

It can also be danced as a madison (I guess ya know line dancing in the Midwest, right? ;-)

There’s a whole madison revival down here, and my friends and I often dance a madison or two at parties.

Oldie but goldie (one of my favorites, and one of the most beautiful American songs ever) : “Stand By Me” (Ben E. King)that could apply to Jaz & Vayl relationship, don’t ya think?

Seal’s cover of that song in his last album is fabulous.

    Original –> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vbg7YoXiKn0

I tested (and tasted) it as a cool/slow madison, and it really works… You can take my word for it.

Another one? Remember the Ally McBeal TV series? This song works quite well as a madison in parties… (no, no… I’m no madisonaholic ;-) and also for hoovering and housecleaning in general, when you’re not in the mood for it… it really gives ya the kick ya need to get on with the tedious chores round the house…;-)

A kickass song, as Jaz Dearest would say! ;-)

    Don’t ya guess ?…

“MY EVERYTHING” ! of course… by the great Barry White

I saw him once at a concert back in Toulouse (a Southwestern French city) where I was living at that time… it was awesome with the husky velvety voice of that great singer bathing in a whole ocean of strings… violins all over the place, not to mention the brass section… well, everything!

    Anyway, perhaps it’s not bit-lit or bit-zik enough, I guess ;-)

OK, now let’s talk about what I call the “road music” or “ride music” (“musique de bagnole”)
“bagnole” (“ride”) stands for “car” (“voiture”) in French slang
    pronounciation: “ba-nee-ole” ;-)

It’s music to drive the night away under the moonlight if you’re fortunate enough to own a convertible and drive along the Pacific Coast Highway or whatever scenic road you may have in your vicinity… yet it also works by day in your basic ride, of course… when you gotta work, shopping, picking up the kids at school, whatever…

OK, I don’t drive any more (anyway, who needs a car in Paris, France? Half of the Parisians don’t possess one and use cabs & public transport) yet I may still ride shotgun and play CD’s of “ride music” that is : most of Joan Baez’s wonderful guitar songs, Springsteen, Fleetwood Mac, Suzanne Vega, folk-rock, country, Californian soft-rock, you name it…

“A Heartfelt line or two” by Joan Baez, for example ;-)

“I think tonite I’ll sit down and write
    A heartfelt line or two
And if they turn out good enough
I owe every word to you”
    ;-)

    J-NO

  31. Jean-Noël Says:

    Sorry for the truncated link…
    The one below works
“Kill, Kill, Kill” by the Pierces, for Jaz then ;-)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8trKFePpnvk

  32. Jean-Noël Says:

OMG, that’s another hot one for Jaz:
“The First Taste” by Fiona Apple

“I lie in an early bed, thinking late thoughts
Waiting for the black to replace my blue
I do not struggle in your web because it was my aim to get caught
But daddy longlegs, I feel that Im finally growing weary
Of waiting to be consumed by you

Give me the first taste, let it begin heaven cannot wait
    Forever
Darling, just start the chase – Ill let you win but you must
    Make the endeavor

Oh, your love give me a heart contusion
Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red
    Your hungry flirt borders intrusion
Im building memories on things we have not said
Full is not heavy as empty, not nearly my love, not nearly my love, not
    Nearly

Give me the first taste, let it begin heaven cannot wait
    Forever
Darling, just start the chase – Ill let you win, but you must
    Make the endeavor”

  33. Jean-Noël Says:

What about a theme song for Vayl?

“I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred, of course! LOL

    Here’s my parody :

“I’m too sexy for my grave too sexy for my grave
    Death’s going to leave me

I’m too sexy for my tomb too sexy for my tomb
    So sexy it wounds
And I’m too sexy for witches too sexy for demons
    Psychics and humans

And I’m too sexy for your party
    Too sexy for your party
    No way I’m zombie dancing

I’m a vampire you know what I mean
And I flash my little fangs in the moonlight
Yeah in the moonlight in the moonlight yeah
I flash my little fangs in the moonlight

I’m too sexy for the dead too sexy for the dead
    Blood is my daily bread
And I’m too sexy for mortals
Too sexy for mortals Such stupid assholes

I’m a vampire you know what I mean
And I flash my little fangs in the moonlight
Yeah in the moonlight in the moonlight yeah
I flash my little fangs in the moonlight

I’m too sexy for my too sexy for my too sexy for my

‘Coz I’m a vampire you know what I mean
And I flash my little fangs in the moonlight
Yeah in the moonlight in the moonlight yeah
I flash my little fangs in the moonlight

I’m too sexy for my bat too sexy for my bat
    Poor creepy poor creepy bat
I’m too sexy for my death too sexy for my death
    Death’s going to leave me

And I’m too sexy for this thong…
    ;-)

  34. Nicole Says:

Hmm, there are a ton of excellent songs, but a few pop into my head.

    For Jaz:
    Help Me by Alkaline Trio
    and
Goodnight Dragonslayer by Voltaire (It is kind of a lullabye)

    For Jaz & Vayl:
Never Too Late by Three Days Grace
    Anniversary by Voltaire
    and
Paper Heart by The All American Rejects

Then this one just sort of tumbled into my lap:
Samos and Jaz: (It could go either way)
Gives You Hell by The All American Rejects

    Hope that entertains you.

  35. Elizabeth Says:

I quite like ‘Guide me home’ by Buster Cottam ft Eloise for jaz & vayl.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nxDUUoZiKg

Or ‘have a little faith’ in me by joe cocker
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OUYptpCQJ8

    or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIVX1_J_87s&feature=related

  36. jrardin Says:

What an interesting concept, Melanie. Thanks for sharing your picks!

Way to go, Jean-Noel! Now I’ve got “I’m too Sexy” stuck in my head for the day. Wahoo!

Never thought about a song for Samos and Jaz, Nicole. Way to go!

All excellent choices, Elizabeth. Wow! (Really love the last one!!)

  37. Jess Says:

Nicole I agree with Never too Late and My Paper Heart Ilove those two songs 8D
anyway I think that for Vay & Jaz thses whould be good ones:

    Fearless- Taylor Swift
there’s just that whole thing about Jaz Falling for Val and she can’t really stop it but she kind of likes it.

    Kryptonite – 3 doors down
    I just love the Song:)

    Guardian Angel – Lovex
    Just love it SO much

    For Jaz and Matt:

    Breif and Beautiful- Nikki

In a way this is Cause Jaz views there time as short, I think so anyway.

  38. Adam Says:

Mine at the moment would probably be ‘Ignorance’ by Paramore =)
