Christmas in July!
At least I hope it’ll feel that way to many of you, because the powers-that-be at Orbit have decided to release the first three books in the Jaz Parks series in mass market format for US consumption this summer. That means the books will be regular paperback sized (and priced). Here’s a sneak peak at the cover for the mass market cover of Once Bitten, Twice Shy, which will hit bookstore shelves the first week of July.
So, what do you think? This cover, or the original? Preferences?

It’s rather pink. And orange.
So no, I’m not sure if I like it at all. I’m sure it might get some people interested because they like the bright shinies but I do prefer the rather stylishly minimalistic white covers.
(I see those covers as kind of being like Jaz herself, easy to underestimate but full of awesome and kickass.)

Let me say absolutely fabulous. I can’t wait to get these in at the store in July! I was looking for a new series to introduce some of our mass market readers to and this is definitely going to be one of my summer read recommendations.
As for the cover itself, I am a fan of the white backgrounds on your trade copy books, but I am really enjoying the city backdrop to this cover. There is a feel of mystery and excitement to it that is distinctly different.

It’s definitely a nice cover but I’m very partial to the lips of the original! I don’t know if that was the US or the UK version though… simple, but very effective! That’s such good news though, woohoo!

I like the original ones simply because they were pretty.
Picture on white with blood stains & stuff. (:
The UK OBTS is still my favourite, that picture is what got me into this series.

But this one looks good aswell, this is great news!
Congratulations!

Hmm… I like this cover but I still prefer the original. I have the white background version of this cover but yeah, I don’t think the BG suits it. Sorry.

i like the original covers the most!

I like this cover for the average sized paperback.
Everything still catches your attention.

I like this cover more than I like the original
Pretty background, what city is that?
April 6th, 2009 at 6:01 am
Yay for having the books in mass-produced paperback!
I do prefer the original cover…but that might be due to the fact that I have a bit of an emotional attachment to all my books. I think they’re prettier than any others.
The city scene IS pretty sweet.

Neat perspective, Chloe.
Wahoo! Thanks, Becky!
The lips were limited to the UK version, Phoebe. Taylor has posted a link to the cover for those of you who haven’t seen it–one of my faves as well Taylor, thanks!
Please don’t feel you have to apologize, Bec. I appreciate your honesty.
Thanks for your input, Megz!
I do like the colors, zanheltangia. Hopefully they’ll really attract the eye.
That should be Miami, Rose.
I agree with the mass market choice, Monica. I’m hoping we’ll add lots more friends to our discussions this summer as a result!

This makes me so very happy.
I’ve read Jaz from the library, but wanted to buy them and my budget says massmarket good.
Thanks,
Jana

CONS: It doesn’t have the same impact as the original… maybe because of the busy background? PROS: 1) The quote about smart bitches cracks me up 2) It’s Jaz Parks in mass market!!! So what’s your preference, Jen?
April 6th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
I really like this cover, but I also think that the original was better. The original was a unique style in a genre that has a very limited idea of coverart. The new cover, while pretty looks very much like many other covers I have seen in the urban fantasy world. The original cover just has more originality.

it’s good. it’s a bit of a bugger i live in the u.k. though. oh well.
the covers good (especially the city background)

Wow! That’s awesome news!! Congrats, Jen!!
As for the cover, I do think it catches the eye straight away, which as the others said is useful for mass market edition. Nonetheless I agree with the majority, I just love the white covers! They’re more simple and as Taylor said the blood stains are cool. I’ve got the UK version with the mouth and I liked the US version as well, but in white. I think the city and all the colours, though nice, draw the attention away from the main figure. Then obviously, that’s just my thought.

Love the original cover, though the new one is pretty neat too. Should get mass market readers picking it up to look at it.
Hopefully we will eventually get the mass market outside of the US. Should get you some more loyal fans

I think both covers are friggin’ awesome! (i know tha doesn’t help much, so…)
I think this one is more interesting because it has more in the background, and more colors, but it still shows the crossbow bolts on her waist.

This cover is nice but I was first attracted to your books because of the original cover when browsing the library. I always love the covers for your books.
As a Clevelander, it would be sweet if the cityscape on the cover was Cleveland but duh, they don’t really spend time here, just mention it. Plus people would probably be more attracted to a Miami book cover over a C-town book cover:)
April 6th, 2009 at 8:18 pm
It’s a nice cover but I rather like the old white with blood stains covers a bit more. They left a stronger impression.
Can’t wait to read the next book, I am so hooked!
April 7th, 2009 at 2:36 am
Oh, I was thinking about this yesterday. It is SO COOL to see how many people respond to your blogs now and how your readership has obviously progressed. I remember when the first book came out and there were like five of us posting, lol. It’s awesome, I’m happy for you.
April 7th, 2009 at 3:59 am
I’m happy to hear that, Jana. Hopefully that will be true for lots of other people too.
Smart Bitches absolutely rock, Rox! Considering the cover is in a frame on my wall, I’d have to say my preferences is the white with red lips (UK) that Taylor has linked. Probably because it was the first Orbit ever sent me, and I can still remember how my heart raced when I opened the envelope and saw it, and then danced around the room holding it in front of me to make sure it was real.
I agree the white is unique, Kalea. It really jumps off of a shelf that’s generally full of dark spines.
I agree about the background, Emzie-pooh. Hopefully it gives readers a feel for the scene right away.
I’m glad you feel that way about the bloodstains, Vale. I’ve always wondered if they put people off–but I think they’re uber cool!
Thanks, Penny! Fingers crossed!
Great to hear, kayla!
Cleveland rocks, Jeanette!
Then hopefully you’ll be glad to hear Bite Marks has gone to my copyeditor. That’s a big next step on the way to publication, AVP, and one I’m always glad to see the manuscript take. One more edit to sharpen the story, then a smaller one for grammar and off it goes to the printer!
I remember as well, Phoebe. And I have to say it’s wonderful both that we have so many more great friends here, and that you loyal fans are still hanging out with me!

Like Taylor, my favourites are actually the UK covers. I like the simplicity, and the colour scheme in mainly black, white and red. The US mass market paperback covers are a little bit garish. Sorry. But it’s great that the books are being released in Mass Market, so more people can read your books – which are just getting more and more awesome with every book.
April 8th, 2009 at 9:28 am
I like the original covers and sizes. They’ll still be releasing the new ones in the same old format I hope. I hate a mismatched series. Nothing drives me more crazy than having mismatched books on my shelf.

(But congrats on the mm format! That’s a huge deal!)

Nah, don’t be sorry, Malin. We love all opinions here. I will say, much like the crow, I do love some bling on my girls. So between the One More Bite covers, I like the American version slightly better, because you get to see more–well, what are those on her nifty little outfit? Rivets? http://www.hachettebookgroup.com/books_9780316022095.htm
Yes, EMarie, the new books will come out in the bigger, trade paperback size in the US and the original, mass market size (but with the unique white covers) in the UK as has been the pattern so far. Thanks for asking!
April 10th, 2009 at 3:56 pm
That scenery is absolutely exquisite!!! Still like the original better, though. Each book has given us jsut a little glimpse of a p iece of JAz, and I like slowly seeing how you see her. The backdrop takes the ofcus off Jaz=piece and also makes hte title harder to read.
April 19th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
I love this one. It gives it flare and i think it is awesome.
