How ’bout them Apples?

Purely by chance, while I was visiting my profile page on Goodreads, I discovered that the German translation of one of my books had been added to my “books by Jennifer Rardin” list.  This is especially cool since I’d never seen the cover until that moment, and had no idea the release date would be December 1 of this year.  I’ll leave it to our native German speakers to translate the title.  But get a load of this picture, will ya?

Ein Quantum Blut

I’m not actually sure which one this is, but I’m guessing it’s number three in the series.  My reasoning?  I went to this site and found the first two books, which will be released in August and October respectively.  Here are the covers:

ein_vampir_ist_nicht_genugman_lebt_nur_ewig

So what do you think of the bleeding apple?  Or is it her hand?  Thoughts?

Haha! Wow. Do you feel special Jen? You have now expanded into German territory. That deserves some kind of applause.

I’m loving the apple. It’s so bold especially with the blood red nails and the actual blood dripping. Awesome. And the intricate pattern above your name. It’s really, really good. I wonder why they’ve strayed from the English cover design for the third one and not the first two though? Odd.

  2. Emma Says:

I agree with Bec, it is very off to change the cover on this book…

The bloods appears to be coming from her hand, not the apple.
It would be very interesting to see why they switched the cover art.

Congrats on hitting the german market.

  3. Gareth Says:

    Hey Jenn,
My germans rough but based on the basic premise of an indo european language its something like:
ein quantum blut (a quantity of blood)
ein vampir ist nicht genug (A vampire is not enough)
man lebt nur ewig (one lives only eternity)

I suspect that it can be tidied up a bit and its going more for a take on some of the 007 titles:
So as a bit of guesswork:
ein quantum blut – Quantum of blood
ein vampir ist nicht genug (The vampire is not enough)
man lebt nur ewig (one only lives eternally)

Hope it helps, and don’t forget to ask for copies of the covers to go into a file for you to keep.

i really like it. actually there’s a picture i’ve seen on this website that has snow white anime character with a bleeding apple in her hand.
this just reminds me of it.

I’m a native german speaker, so I try to translate it back into english.

    ‘One vampire is not enough’
    ‘One only lives forever’
    ‘Quantum of blood’

My translation isn’t that different from Gareth. I think too, they sound a lot like remakes of Bond titles. Probably because they describe the books as a mix between Dracula and 007.

  6. jrardin Says:

I feel uberblessed, Bec and, like you, am pretty taken with the cover. Not sure why they changed it. Could be they have one too similar to Biting the Bullet on another book. That seemed to be the case for the French version of Another One Bites the Dust.

    Thanks Emma!

    It does help Gareth, thanks.

It’s a pretty cool image, isn’t it emzie-pooh? I’d definitely stop and pick up the book if I saw it on a shelf.

Thanks so much, Tanja. They do remind you of Bond titles, don’t they? Aw, now I’ve got that 007 background music going in my head. May have to go hunt me down a villain or two if it doesn’t stop!

  7. Vale Says:

That’s cool, but I think I like the original cover better.
And I agree with Gareth and Tanja on the tranlations, they really seem to have taken (a bit too much?) from the titles of 007.

I thought of something, although it may just be a stretch of my imagination. Could the apple refer to Vayl’s “temptation”, his obsession to find his boys that causes him to mess things up?

  8. Eimear Says:

omg i actually love this cover!!! so cool! :)

  9. Chloe Says:

I’m getting a bit tired of the whole bloodied apples thing in design.

But I kind of like the continuation of the objects theme. I was kind of surprised when I saw the cover for the third book. It was ‘Oh hey, most of a person’ rather than an abstract part of one.

  10. jrardin Says:

That’s certainly possible, Vale. It would be neat to know what they were thinking when they chose it.

    Great to hear, Eimear!

    Interesting to hear, Chloe.

  11. Sarah Brackett Says:

I really like the covers. I would buy them if I saw them. The one with the lips with blood looks really familiar. Hmm….

  12. Rox! Says:

big congrats, jen! love the translations. :-) you’re like an honorary bond girl, jen! or should i say jaz is. yeah, the apple thing just reminded me of twilight, i.e. overdone. since #3 is my fave, sticking to the bullet theme would’ve been my preference.

  13. Alison Says:

I’m thinking I would love to have fingernails like that model!

  14. BeckieB Says:

Very pretty but no where near as good as our cover

Its just not origional they way the others are

i mean come one….hand.. apple….twilight, its kind of been owned

even if you take the twilight thing away, snow white Jaz aint

    just my thoughts

  15. Van Says:

Don’t you… control what happens with your books?

I thought you’d get to see all stages of product development, plus I’d way too paranoid to let anyone change my books. Why not just use the same cover?

Well at least they removed that extremely annoying font (the one your name is written in at the top of the page). Gah, it’s everywhere! I swear all my graphical artist friends use it in their work now.

Bit off topic but that makes me think you should have your site redesigned… it’s elegant in it’s simplicity so don’t change too much, maybe the images and the FONT. ;) .

Anyway, nice covers. Hope you get good market penetration in Germany, especially since they’re probably going to be reading a lot more now that the government is trying to ban violent video games all together. Poor Germans, no civil rights since Hitler >_<. First it was the Communists, now the Government! When will it end? :P

  16. jrardin Says:

Ha! Yeah, I get a big say in what happens with the guts of my books, Van. But at this point I have little input on covers. Especially when foreign rights are sold. In that case nobody asks my opinion. Or, at least, no one has so far! (Which is why I’m so excited that Orbit has filled its Art Department with such imaginative, creative people. I know how important covers are to a reader’s buying decisions, and I adore mine.)

As for my site, it’s funny that you should mention a redesign, because we’re actually in the middle of that. When we’re done, it’ll reflect the look of the mass market versions of my books, which have just begun to be released. It will also include a new glossary page for everyone who is stumped by my weird words. And if I ever get around to it I’m going to change the picture on my bio page. I’ve lost thirty pounds and added blond highlights to that mop of red hair, so I kinda don’t look like that lady anymore. Can’t wait to see it!

  17. Van Says:

Oh good. Can’t wait to see the new site :) . All your fans are here for input if you want before it goes public ;) .

    Still not liking the font though on the covers though (eg. http://ebooks-imgs.connect.com/product/400/000/000/000/000/066/951/400000000000000066951_s4.jpg , http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n44/n223554.jpg , http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/images/n54/n270729.jpg , http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_1HmFiNHDycs/SZxves_-saI/AAAAAAAACUM/lmiA0xVuB-A/s400/jennifer_rardin-bitemarks.jpg , http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/419R%2BD056rL.jpg , http://www.littlebrown.co.uk/assets/images/EAN/Large/9781841496405.jpg )

By the way, I love the covers other then the aforementioned. It’s a far too generic font for such an awesome series :) . Doesn’t really stand out.

I hate to bring other authors into this but have a look at fonts like this ( http://bobsbooks.files.wordpress.com/2006/06/oldkingdom.jpg ).

Anyway, nice speaking to you Mrs. Rardin.

  18. Sarah B. Says:

I actually don’t mind the font. I think if you’re the average reader, you probably won’t know which fonts seem popular in the world of graphic artists. Also, I’m a fan of the covers in that they are brightly colored and you don’t get to see the whole person. I mean, Jaz looks the way each reader envisions her, so why bother w/ a face. The striking covers actually lead me to pick up these books, and I haven’t set them down. I’ve read them all twice in a row. The US covers don’t look all gothic or romance novel-y (new word) like a lot of the typical vampire books you see out there.
Anyways, Ms. Rardin, I love these books and I can’t wait until October!
