Can I Drive?

Unlike Jaz, I’m not huge into cars.  All I really want in my wheels is reliability and decent gas mileage.  So imagine my surprise when I discovered Top Gear–and loved it!  Last night they were comparing a Porsche to a BMW to an Aston Martin–while I kept wiping the drool off my chin.  It’s not that I want one for myself.  Just that the sight of them driving at breakneck speeds across the roads of the Isle of Man (can you say “No National Speed Limit Baby!”) made me long for an empty highway where I, too, could shove the accelerator of somebody else’s car to the floor.  I may not care much about make and model, but I am big into speed.

So’s my kid.  She’ll jump into the passenger seat anytime we have an extra ticket to a race.  But she also loves the lines of the Corvette. She can smell them miles away, and see them before they’ve crested a rise in front of the vehicle she’s driving.  Someday, I’m sure, she’ll own one.

Hubby prefers muscle cars.  His prediction is that when he’s rich and I’m famous (his favorite phrase) we will own a ’71 Dodge Charger just like this one. Sweet!

So what’s your idea of the perfect ride?  Do you prefer sporty or classic?  Do tell!

I personally have an 03 Monte Carlo — I just love it. Go figure, I was already set to purchase an 04 Malibu (it had a kick-ass engine), when the salesman told me they had to clear out the 03s and my dream car was mine (for almost 10k less than the malibu!

There’s a stretch of road along the south shore beaches of long island that let you open up the horses of my engine — that every so often when I need to decompress I head over to and put the pedal to the metal.

Also — have you seen the new Camaro? Sweet!

  2. Jani Says:

I’m with you on the Top Gear thing. The only thing I know about cars is what it takes to get mine going. But I love that show!!!! It’s awesome. Something the British did right. Kidding, I love you guys.

I’d go for a convertible classic. I’m not even going to try and throw around names ’cause I’ll just end up sounding like an idiot. I just had to say my bit.

  3. Leslie P Says:

Remember the 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 from the movie Gone in 60 Seconds? I’ve always loved Mustangs and that movie sealed it. Yeah–that’s my dream car.

But I’ll settle for the 2009 Cobra Mustang :)

  4. Sarah Brackett Says:

OMG…my dream car was a Aston Martin Vanquish. It’s sleek, fast and gets my engine going. Also how can you go wrong with a 007 Bond car unfortunately they don’t make them anymore so it would be hard to get one.

Now I think I would like one of the new muscle cars that looks like one of the old ones like a Dodge Charger or Challenger or even a Chevy Camero.

Right now I have a new addition to my family on it’s way so I will have to stick to my Jetta which with it’s 1.8 turbo has a lot of pick up and go that I need right now.

  5. Melanie Says:

I’m learning how to drive, but there are plenty of cars I like.
I like the Lotus Elise–no, I think I LOVE it! But I also like some luxury cars like the Mercedes CLS 550 or the Mercedes C300.
I also think that the Delorean (I’m not sure if that’s how you spell it) from “Back to the Future” is cool.
The Chevy Camaro is awesome, but I like the IROC-Z or the Z28 a little better. Of course, Corvettes are freaking awesome!
However, I have 2 dream cars that I would consider buying: the Scion tC and the Chevy Cobalt. The rest of the cars I like are way too many for this space. But basically, anything that’s cool.

  6. Meryl Says:

Finally others have found the greatness that is Top Gear on BBC America!!!!! I think that I would have to go for classic. I am all about the classic cars…not that I’m saying that I don’t love some of the newer, sportier, tricked out cars (Check out the Ariel atom on youtube, all I can say is Jesus, Maria, y Frikkin’ Jose)but being a fan of the CWTV series supernatural (Eric Kripke rocks!!!) and being from Wisconsin where you practically see people selling and having old cars in their driveways, I am more inclines to the classic cars. I mean come on who doesn’t love the old Stingray corvettes or a fine lookin’ camaro or charger.

  7. Beccy Says:

Im currently Sixteen and in England when we are Seventeen we can learn how to drive so this September i will hopefully be getting a car for my birthday, i would really like either a Porsche 911 Turbo, or a 1970 Dodge challenger! But due to this whole credit crunch thing, the only car i will be getting is probably going to be like the one from the Flintstones, you know where you have a little hole in it and just run around? But hey atleast i will have toned legs? So yay ! And yes Top Gear is the best, my dad is the stig……okay he isnt but he had a top that says he is !

  8. Becca Says:

I don’t know very many cars but I love the Aston Martin Vanquish and just about any corvette. My dream car would probably be the 1967 corvette stingray. I love the look of that car.

  9. Tori Says:

Personally, I would love to have a Porsche 911 Turbo (red) or an Aston Martin Vanquish (black). As long as it’s fast, I’m happy.

  10. Taylor (: Says:

I’m a huge Supernatural fan so naturally I love me a 1967 Chevrolet Impala! :D

  11. Chloe Says:

Oooh, Top Gear’s fun to watch. Mostly because of the presenters though and the whacky things they end up doing. Because I couldn’t care less about the actual cars beyond whether they look pretty or not.

But… I do have an incredibly soft spot for Mercedes. Mostly the A, B and C classes of their modern runs, but I do like me some of the older models in the B/C class.

That aside though, as long as a car looks good and has fairly good fuel consumption, I don’t care (too much) about what brand it is.

  12. Bec Says:

    Top Gear?! Love it!
My fave ep would be the USA one. With the dead cow roadkill on the roof? lol
I don’t have a favourite car. Anything yellow or black and fast is my kinda thing. I’ll have to wait another couple (cough 15 cough) years until that type of thing is even within my price range but yeah…

  13. Ashleigh Says:

So I’m not really big into cars. Mostly I can identify the vehicle as being a car, a van, a truck, a bus, or and SUV and that’s pretty much it. I only know my car is a 2004 Kia Rio because I’ve had to write it down a few times for parking stuff. But when I was researching for my Nano novel, I really liked the car my hero drives: a 2007 Lamborghini Murcielago. Very fast, very shiny, very expensive. Probably will never own one.

  14. Carly Says:

Ooh we get supernatural here in in NZ and it has to be one of my fav shows eva! we also get top gear too. but hmm cars i would hav to say that the porsche 911 turbo (in yellow) or mayb a black lamborgini(i cant spell :) )or the new V16 bugatti u just cannot go wrong with speed the faster the better!!!

  15. Emma Says:

TopGear is one of my favourite programmes, Richard Hammond and Jeremy Clarkson rule!
I’ve always loved cards…Tomboy at heart, much to my mums dismay

As for cars…I love classics mostly, the new cars coming out, though from different companies, might as well be carbon copies of each other.

I’ve always loved the Mercury Custom and the old Ford Sierra, and Escort (before they scrapped them for the Ick there building now!)

    I’m a big fan of the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti_Veyron now that’s a nice car

  16. Emma Says:

Also…I have to agree that Impala is absolutely gorgeous, I’d love to own one.

  17. jrardin Says:

Hubby was just talking about Camaros (oes? How in the world do you pluralize that?) the other day, Joann, but the old ones. He loves to watch that auction show. What is it, Barrett-Jackson I think? Lotsa cool old sports cars on that one!

Yeah, what is it about that show, Jani? They just crack me up.

I have not seen the movie Leslie, but the car rocks.

Ahhh, Sarah, Bond cars! Gluuurg. Say no more!

All cool picks, Melanie. But I must mention that any car whose doors raise straight up is out for me. I can only suffer so many concussions before I won’t be able to negotiate stairs anymore!

Classics appeal to me too, Meryl, but in a more sedate kind of way. Here’s what attracts my attention on the road:
    http://www.seriouswheels.com/pics-1950-1959/1956-Chevrolet-Bel-Air-blue-white-ma.jpg

LOL, Beccy! I nearly bought that T-shirt from their website. You know, the one that says, “I Am The Stig.” But no one would believe me! As for your first car, take heart. My daughter’s first set of wheels started out as her great-grandmother’s car. Yeah, ooooold. And my son’s first truck was so unreliable he wasn’t allowed to drive it more than five miles from the house! (This is what practical parents do, realizing that kids occasionally drive vehicles into ditches and light poles before they figure out the intricacies of the road.)

Yes, Becca. Gorgeous. I can remember, when I was about four, riding in the back of my dad’s silver Corvette. The memory sticks with me because we were on a country road and it started to rain, so we had to stop and put the roof on. Being four, I thought that was the coolest thing I’d ever seen.

So I take it you were never into the Pinto, Tori??

Ahh, Taylor, you have picked THE perfect car! It even squeaks pretty!

I thought the same, Chloe, but when their celebrity guest literally drove the wheels off their track car, I thought that was pretty dern cool!

Sounds lovely, Bec. My problem is I’m a maintenance-free kind of person. So if I had a black car it would always look like crap because I’d never wash it often enough!

Same with me, Ashleigh. As in, I’ll never own anything Jaz drives. But it’s fun to live her driving sometimes!

Do you really? That’s so cool, Carly! They’re advertising the new season for September and I CAN’T WAIT!!! (My daughter and I are already plotting who gets to have season four as a Christmas gift!)

Excellent point, Emma. Something with character always appeals to me way ahead of a box on wheels–which is probably what I’ll always own!

  18. Sophie Says:

While i don’t actually drive, a girl can dream and it’s always about the aston martin DB9 or a variant thereof, such a beautiful car, and obviously has the james bond thing going for it too!

Top Gear is the best show, they show reruns of it all the time, theres an episode where their mums roadtest small cars, its hilarious, you should keep an eye out for it!

  19. Andie Says:

Hi Jen! I understand the pull of the Corvette. My friend Roland has one, and I’ve ridden in it. The police academy here lets car clubs use their track on weekends for time trials, and he takes the vette there. I got to ride with him once–that was a trip! A lot of people take their Minis out there, and other cool cars.

The ideal vehicle for me though is a Jeep Wrangler. I like how they look, and I have really wanted one of those for years! They look fun!

I have caught an episode of Top Gear before, and it’s definitely fun to watch, even if you’re not into cars! (I watched the episode with David Tenant!)

  20. Meryl Says:

Love the car!!!! I always see people driving cars like that on the freeway. I especially love it when I see those old Godfather/1920′s Gangster cars. Those are the best.

  21. Karen Feldman Says:

    A 1962 Jaguar xke convertible.
Had a boyfriend (back in the 80′s) who drove one, burnt orange. It could do 140 mph on the curvy backroads of VT. Freaking amazing ride.

  22. Penny W Says:

Love the Lotus Elise, anything Bugatti, most Ferrari’s and nearly gave myself whiplash over a Morgan the other day.

Must admit, Te Papa currently has 9 F1 cars on display, major drool :-D

And love Top Gear, thoughly enjoyed watching them trying to destory a Toyota Hilux.

  23. Eimear Says:

to be honest im not one for cars… but i heart motorbikes :D check this out http://graphics8.nytimes.com/images/2008/04/20/automobiles/harley.jpg

  24. Eimear Says:

…its called Harley Davidson, dark custom – Cross Bones

    droooollll…… :D

btw i love top gear as well.. so funny!

  25. Nikibee Says:

Love Top Gear and glad to hear its in America too (btw there is a special episode in vietnam which is v.funny),
I cant wait to learn to drive, damn age ristrictions in England lol, but at somepoint i would love to have a classic VW Bug, sad but true, i do have a soft sport for a Cadillac though, as i went to my leavers ‘do’ in one with some friends.lol

  26. Nicole Says:

I don’t care what it is as long as it’s fast! The car I drive now, not so much, but I bought a Turbo Beetle when they first came out. It had a spoiler that popped up at about I-Hope-That-Is-Not-A-Cop MPH. I tested it on a road trip and got the worst speeding ticket of my life, and a snazzy police lecture to go with it from a Connecticut State Trooper.

  27. jrardin Says:

Okay, Sophie, I’ll be looking for that episode. Sounds terrific!

Hi Andie! Your police academy sounds like the coolest! I keep telling hubby we need an old Army Jeep, considering the roads we end up taking on our way to various hiking destinations. I haven’t got him convinced yet–but I keep trying!

LOL, Penny! Glad to hear you didn’t need a neck brace over a pretty car. Now, if they ever do a Jaz Parks movie, I want to hear differently the first time you see Vayl!

Beauty, Eimear. Did I mention that I know how to ride? My dad taught me, so I was actually riding motorcycles a couple of years before I could drive a car.

Not sad at all, Nikibee! Love to hear about everyone’s unique tastes. You’d probably look rad in it. Especially if you wore red sunglasses and a boa!

Oh man, Nicole! Hope the speed was worth the fine! (I hear Wyoming is a great place to let it all hang out. No traffic and long stretches of empty highway.)

Ah, too true, Meryl! Reminds me, quirkily, of the one day every year when my son and his buddies dress up like gangsters. They are, really, too cool for words. And if they had the right car for it? They’d be in heaven!

    Woo! Nice pick, Karen!

  28. Samantha Says:

Hey all, I’m back! (just in case any of you missed me XD!)
I absolutely love the Ford F350 Desiel -The Dodge Charger(Black/Dark Blue) – Harley’s of any kind – Or the Mustang Chargers. Oh lordy, just talkin bout them puts a smile on my face & makes me drool! Sorry for that mental image!

  29. jrardin Says:

Of course we missed you, Samantha! Cool picks on the wheels, too!

  30. Sapphire Says:

    Mmmhmm gotta love Top Gear
And oohh best car I can think of Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster.
    So pretty!

  31. jrardin Says:

    So true, Sapphire!

  32. hagelrat Says:

    I want a Zonda. :)

  33. Shannon Says:

Hmmmm, thats a hard one lol. Well I love fast cars *drool* But! Im definately more of a motorbike person! From when my uncle took me out on his bike I was hooked! Perfect bike: Harley Davidson :D :D

  34. Michelle Says:

    I love Top Gear!
All I can say is JAGUAR.
After that i’m not too picky though i would love an XK coupe.

  35. Meryl Says:

Did anyone check out the Ariel Atom??? It is so cool!!!!!!!!!!!! You also have to check out the special challenges The Botswana Special is great. Richard Hammond with his opal cadet is awsome!!! I want Oliver!!!!!!!!!
