Where the Research Takes Me

This week and next I’ll be putting the final touches on Bitten in Two. I’ve finished the second draft and am now in the cleaning phase, during which I jump to different parts of the manuscript and sharpen the rough edges before giving it two more read-overs. One for fact-checking. One for readability. Then it goes to Phase Two–a foggy island shrouded in mystery during which editorial magic transforms it into the book you’ll eventually have in your hands.

But that’s then.

Now I’ve begun the research (mostly involving minute details like clothing, food, and music) that I always save until the end because, though they add great color, they’re just not important enough to the plot for me to worry about until now. Which means, in the past week, I have looked at pictures of severed goat’s heads. Read about an exotic meal starring sheep’s brains. Studied the intricate workings of what is widely accepted to be the most accurate sniper rifle in the world. Learned the Arabic word for “facial veil.” And spent a great deal of time communicating with my Moroccan contact, Anouk, who is turning out to be a font of knowledge. (Look for the official THANK YOU to her in the Acknowledgements section of the book!)

Here are just a few of the amazing pictures I’ve come across during the course of my research. What do you suppose Jaz, Vayl, and the crew could be up to in these surroundings?

Wow looks fantastic, very indiana jones or something! can really imagine Jaz and Vayl strolling through the market drawing a few glances! As to what they could be up to, could be any number of exciting things, maybe meeting with a mysterious contact?

  2. Eimear Says:

i thibk Jaz would be snow boarding on those class looking mountains in the background of the last pick :P

  3. Caitlin Says:

Where there is food, there’s Cole. Especially with the involvment of brownies.

  4. Meryl Says:

I can totally see Cole making jokes about the surroundings, especially the third one…I can totally see him laying out in the middle of a mission sun bathing or telling some sunbathing story involving an ex girlfriend, a bottle of baby oil, and a barely there bikini.

  5. Rarah Says:

Such pretty pictures… lookin’ forward to what happens that could take them to the indoor market/shopping area (I’m a sucker for brick streets, what can I say?!).

Easy to imagine mystery in Marrakech, Sophie!!

I can totally see that, Eimear!

Mmm, brownies. Caitlin, he’d be one of those doofs who’d cover his gums with the goo before he talked too.

You’re right, Meryl. Cole does love his stories.

The shopping area (Djemaa el Fna) sees lots of action, Rarah. Hope you enjoy it!

  7. Carly Says:

hmmm Jaz and Vayl would definately be looking around the market places with Jack running around sniffing everything and trying to say hello to everyone all at the same time. Cole would definately be talking to any girl he can find.

  8. Penny W Says:

Why can I see Cole cooking up some hair brained scheme involving hiding under that pile of skins????

Can see Vayl dragging a reluctant Jaz shopping in the souks, somehow she doesn’t stike me as a shop till you drop kinda gal :-D And possibly meeting some friend of Cassandras there.

The photo with the mountains in the background, Cassandra backstory.

  9. Vale Says:

The last one makes me think about a research of something or someone and/or a fight with the enemy. In the other pictures they could be just looking around while they suddendly spot the enemy or a suspect, who disappears among the crowd. I can totally see a chase through the souk! Or maybe they’re things they see while following someone…

Sounds like you know the crew, Carly!

Oh geez, Penny. Cole would do that! And you are so right about Jaz!

Glad I’ve got you thinking, Vale!
